prestashop vs woocommerce

PrestaShop v. WooCommerce

When setting up an online store, choosing the right platform is essential in determining how it will react to future situations. You must put research into each of the platforms to decide what the best route is for you.  In this post we are going to talk about the main features and differences between two well established content management system (CMS) platforms: PrestaShop vs WooCommerce.

What can PrestaShop offer you?

PrestaShop is an open code source software that is constantly being polished and improved.

If you want to use PrestaShop, all you have to do is download the software and install it on your own local server. You can also purchase a hosting service that will make your shop visible to all Internet users.

Once you have successfully installed the software you will have access to a brand new dashboard for your online store. It’ll look something like this:

This dashboard gives a clear, intuitive and easy look/design for new users. If you want to add new products to your store, all you have to do is click on “Catalog”, “Products” and “Add new products”. Additionally, you’ll have options to configure the title and meta description of your products to improve the SEO of your products’ pages. Easy, right?

When talking about a store’s configuration, PrestaShop has a wide range of options that will help you configure your store the way you want. For example, you’ll be able to check different payment options or set up new access profiles for your employees.

PrestaShop also allows you to install a wide variety of modules that will help you in every aspect of your store. From modules that help you configure your checkout process, to modules that will help you with the digital marketing strategy of your store (just like our app!).

You can find all of these modules (some free, some paid) at PrestaShop’s official addons marketplace.

Not only that, but with an array of beautiful themes or templates to choose from, you’ll be able to customize your store to give it a unique style.

If you want more information, don’t forget to read our recommendations of the best free themes for PrestaShop. Also be sure to check out the official PrestaShop templates page and choose the template that best suits the style of your store.

What can WooCommerce offer you?

If you want a WooCommerce store, you will first need to install a WordPress software on your own local server or buy a hosting server to make the store visible and accessible to everyone. Like before, you’ll be provided with your very own WooCommerce dashboard. Let’s have a look:

As you can see, the WooCommerce dashboard is pretty similar to that of PrestaShop’s. However, there are more management options available to the user.

Adding a new product is just as simple, all you have to do is click “Products” and “Add new products”. There are also a few options for configuring the SEO of the product page (editing the titles and meta descriptions).

It’s important to note that there are a lot more plugins to choose from to satisfy any need of your store. Don’t forget to check their official WordPress plugin store and the WooCommerce extensions store.

PrestaShop or WooCommerce?

Let’s have a general look at what each platform can offer:

PrestaShop

  • Easy to use and configure.
  • Various customization options.
  • Better performance as an ecommerce solution.

WooCommerce

  • More SEO plugins and options.
  • Vast community.
  • Large array of plugins.

Hopefully you were able to see that each platform has their own strengths and weaknesses, but both can be really good options!  Which platform do you think is better, and which would you choose for your store? Let us know in the comment section below!
